The Finance Ministry stated that the notification has not yet been issued because feedback and suggestions from various stakeholders on the Commission’s Terms of Reference are still being received. Once this process is complete, the notification and formation of the Pay Commission will follow.

Inputs sought from stakeholders

In response to a question asked in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday, August 12, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said that letters were sent to the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) and all the states on January 17 and February 17, 2025 to give inputs on the Terms of Reference. He said, ‘Inputs are still being received. So the official notification will be issued at the appropriate time.’

The formation was announced in January

The government had approved the formation of the 8th Pay Commission in January 2025. The commission will review the salary and pension structure of central government employees and pensioners. Along with this, different allowances and facilities will also be assessed.

When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented

The salary revision of government employees is likely to be implemented from January 1, 2026. However, its formal announcement may take 1.5 to 2 years. In such a situation, government employees and pensioners will get increased benefits along with arrears.

What will be the fitment factor in the 8th Pay Commission?

The fitment factor in the 7th Pay Commission was 2.57. Experts believe that in the 8th Pay Commission it can be between 1.92 to 2.86. The higher the fitment factor, the higher will be the salary increase. For example, if an employee’s current basic salary is Rs 30,000 and the fitment factor is fixed at 2.57, then the new basic salary will be Rs 77,100.
