Travelers who frequently drive long distances will welcome the government’s upcoming toll policy, designed to make journeys on expressways and national highways smoother and more economical. Under the new system, toll plazas will be equipped with cameras to scan vehicle license plates, while FASTag will enable automatic toll deductions from the driver’s account. Officials suggest this approach will be more convenient and budget-friendly compared to the current setup, easing the commute for countless drivers nationwide.

New Toll Policy: Pay as You Travel – Longer Distances, Higher Charges

Under the upcoming toll system, drivers will be charged based on the distance they travel—meaning the more kilometers covered, the higher the toll tax. According to sources, the new policy will use cameras at toll booths to capture vehicle license plates, while FASTag will automatically deduct the corresponding fees from the user’s account. Officials claim this method will be more cost-effective and efficient than the current setup, reducing delays and eliminating long queues at toll plazas, making travel smoother for commuters.

How many km did you travel on the highway?

The Fastag based km toll policy is a new system in which the toll charge will be taken on the basis of how many km you travelled on the highway. Currently, a fixed fee has to be paid at the toll plaza whether you use the entire route or not. But in the new policy, you will pay only for the km you travelled on the highway. This charge will be automatically deducted from your Fastag account.

How will this policy work?

Use of GPS: GPS (satellite navigation) technology will be used in this system. It will track the route of your car and the toll charge will be calculated on that basis. The aim of the policy is to remove toll plazas so that you do not have to stop for long and the journey becomes fast and easy. Media reports are claiming that a car will have to pay around Rs 50 for every 100 km.

What are the benefits?

You will pay only for the distance you have used the highway. Apart from this, time and fuel will be saved and there will be no need to stop at the toll plaza. Toll will be deducted automatically through GPS, Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) and cameras.
